1D (Direction) Cake!

Haven't heard of 1 Direction? 300 Million (just a rough estimate...) young women have and they are crazy over these five guys from the UK with their Mega Hit "What Makes You Beautiful"...and even though I couldn't book the band themselves for one girls Birthday Party (and also to the incredible dismay of my own daughter...) We were able to make her this 1Direction cake! She specifically requested that Harry Styles (her fav...) be "on the cake" (see miniaturized Harry on top there?)
So I just wanted to keep everyone updated on the latest projects here at Classy Cakes by Amanda! We have alot going on here with the Ides of March approaching (tomorrow...) hopefully heralding a quick end to winter and bringing in a warm spring (again...hopefully).
We have already started to get busy. So over the next couple weeks I will be posting some W.I.P's (works in progress) and then obviously the finished cakes!
Just this week we have several great cakes going, an Owl themed cake (with several beautiful butterflies thrown in...)for a 12 year old cousins Birthday, a Boxing/Crossfit cake for a gym's Grand Opening, a Mini Mouse cake for a 1st Birthday...and that's just the tip of a very yummy iceberg (or 'icingberg' if you will...)
Oh! almost forgot! Also for the same gym as the Grand Opening cake we are experimenting with 'High Protein Cupcakes'! Not only are these cupcakes going to be packed with protein, but they will also be Low Carb and Vegan! That's a super healthy cupcake! That's all packed into a cupcake under a low carb maple frosting! ...Virtually guilt free...but yummy! My test panel seemed to like them as all 12 were gone in 90 seconds!
As always all these projects are 100% custom cakes (and cupcakes). We also have some other fun projects going, like some cake pop action and a flower cupcake bouquet!
To be honest with you, one of the best parts of this job is that as every cake project is custom to the client, using the creative brain storming process WITH the client really leads to some fun themes and concepts!

So recently a friend (and now client) asked for a cake for her friends 50th birthday. Sure, cake is the traditional treat at birthday parties dating back to ancient roman times and the addition of lit candles can be traced back to 18th century Germany. Ok, so no surprise that over half of my business and the cake/bakery industry is birthday related!
The cake that she wanted was a 10" round cake, covered in fondant, butter cream writing with pink, black and white poco-dots all over it. Simple, classic and FUN!
So the question came up during the making of this cake as to 'Why don't people use cakes to celebrate more occasions than they do?'
Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, Baby Showers, etc.. are the more traditional celebrations, but why not other potentially smaller events (depending on perspective of course...) like a good/great marking period for your child, a promotion at work, anniversary of the day you and your significant other met/went on your first date/whatever, getting a new pet, your terrible boss being fired, getting a new car...well you get the idea!
Don't be in the mind set that it has to be a BIG occasion to get a BIG cake. Those are great, but everyone,...EVERYONE loves cake! A smaller cake for a smaller occasion will make a HUGE impression on the person that you get it for! When the kids bring up their grades, get them a small cake and SHOW them how much you appreciate their effort. It's a little thought that goes a LONG way and shows those that you care about that you put some thought into their achievement!
Keep it Classy!
