So recently a friend (and now client) asked for a cake for her friends 50th birthday. Sure, cake is the traditional treat at birthday parties dating back to ancient roman times and the addition of lit candles can be traced back to 18th century Germany. Ok, so no surprise that over half of my business and the cake/bakery industry is birthday related!
The cake that she wanted was a 10" round cake, covered in fondant, butter cream writing with pink, black and white poco-dots all over it. Simple, classic and FUN!
So the question came up during the making of this cake as to 'Why don't people use cakes to celebrate more occasions than they do?'
Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, Baby Showers, etc.. are the more traditional celebrations, but why not other potentially smaller events (depending on perspective of course...) like a good/great marking period for your child, a promotion at work, anniversary of the day you and your significant other met/went on your first date/whatever, getting a new pet, your terrible boss being fired, getting a new car...well you get the idea!
Don't be in the mind set that it has to be a BIG occasion to get a BIG cake. Those are great, but everyone,...EVERYONE loves cake! A smaller cake for a smaller occasion will make a HUGE impression on the person that you get it for! When the kids bring up their grades, get them a small cake and SHOW them how much you appreciate their effort. It's a little thought that goes a LONG way and shows those that you care about that you put some thought into their achievement!
Keep it Classy!
